about

Lauren Crosby's sophomore studio album, I Said Take Me To The Water is a topsy-turvy coming of age story which features a mess of nylon strings, hammond organs, and sharp vocals sweetened with a vintage hint of wit and experience. Driven by her travels, yet inspired by her home on the Atlantic ocean, Lauren pens a rich landscape with the blues of solitude and the greens of heartbreak. I Said Take Me To The Water whisks the listener away from a smoky dive bar pool room to the serene shorelines that coat Northern New England via a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Backed by her band of all-star musicians, this genre-blending album will have your old soul snickering and sniffling.

Track Name: Skylights
He loves me left
He loves me right
He loves me left
Gonna love me right tonight

Yee yee yee yee oh yee

He says hi
I say hi back
Do you like your job?
Stupid questions like that
Now he’s looking me up and down
I can tell his expectations were high
Oh, and I’m looking right through him
Cause to me he looks like any other guy

Well your schedule only depends upon the people that you love in the moment
When you’ve got no one to love, you don’t have much to do
Oh but I know the walking, I know the walking I do
Especially when the grass is green
And the sky is blue

Wake up in the morning he won’t look me in the eye
I’m staring at the ceiling, could of burned a hole through the sky
Now I understand why architects went and created Skylights
Cause a woman needs something beautiful to look through
While contemplating last night

Well your schedule only depends upon the people that you love in the moment
When you’ve got no one to love, you don’t have much to do
Oh I don’t gotta tell ya how much hair I’ve run my fingers through
Oh but I know the walking, I know the walking I do
Especially when the grass is green
And the sky is blue

I catch a cab and I eat breakfast alone
Thinking how long it’ll take me to get back home
And I’m staring my phone screen feeling like the queen of dirt
Cause my kingdom has been tainted by a body who knows nothing of my worth

Well my schedule only depends on the people that I love in the moment
And you see lately if feels like I don’t have much to do
Oh but I know the walking, I know the walking that I do
Especially when the grass is green and the sky is

The sky is...
Track Name: You Don't Need A Rose
If they cut open your chest
your heart would sound the same as those
sweet bells chiming in a church tower
you don't need a rose
you need a sunflower

loving her is like driving a motorcycle in loose sand
have some fun, but it ain't gonna get you nowhere
you don't need a rose
you need a sunflower

In a couple a weeks when the newness wears away
and your family and friends don't have the words to say
there she is still running around your mind
but any man will tell you his best mistress was time

stop asking if you should of or if you shouldn't baby
those steel stained fingers deserve the touch of an honest woman
ey, you don't need a rose
you need a sunflower

Oh I said, sun
you need a sunfower
Track Name: Tak City
Tak City’s only an hours drive away
You invited me so I could sing some songs and play
There was a girl she was looking at me
We’ve got different tongues but eyes of jealousy

The river goddess spoke softly to the banana tree
When will you ever come to bathe your leaves in me?
When the banana tree fancied the reservoir instead
You see why the river bends

Walking up your stairs for the very first time
I focus on your back, oh, and try to avert my eyes
Away from the life that you live behind closed doors
Anything that reminds me of her

The River Goddess spoke softly to the banana tree
When will you ever come to bathe your leaves in me?
When the banana tree fancied the reservoir instead
You see why the river bends

Whose car is that parked in your driveway?
I never see it on the weekdays
All that remains from these lies that you have spun
Is the boiling masses of my red blood

The River Goddess spoke softly to the banana tree
When will you ever come to bathe your leaves in me?
When the banana tree fancied the reservoir instead
You see why the river bends
Track Name: Something Strange
If you miss me, don’t call
I’ve got no interest at all
You chose her now go on your way
You used to call me lady
Now you call her baby
I’ll have no trouble drinking November away

Something Strange, Strange
In this rain
Something Strange, Strange
In this rain

You’ll be in New York City
Calling her pretty, or on some beach
Looking at the stars
Elope for all I care, put flowers in her hair
Read her Steinbeck until she falls asleep
I’ll put snowtires on my car
Drive down to the bar
Smoke a couple splifs and get myself real mean

Something Strange, Strange
In this rain
Something Strange, Strange
In this rain

I’ll drive so far north, till my feet hurt
And my eyes get dark, dreary and grey
Pot and Psilocybin , goddamn I’m stylin’
Mr. State Trooper C’mon here and summons me.
Coke, and adderall, goddamn I’ve seen it all
So has my dear friend Murphy.

Something Strange, Strange
In this rain
Something Strange, Strange
In this rain

If you miss me don’t call,
No recepion at all
I hope this winter treats you…

Strange, Strange
This pain
Something strange,
Strange in this rain
Track Name: Why Are You So Blue
Well the sea has a sister her name is the sky
And they’re always looking eachother eye to eye
And the sky looks down to the sea to say
I can’t keep watching you live your life this way
Why are you so goddamn blue?
Babe, if I were you:

Well I’d pick myself right off the ground
I’d get a real job stop splashing around oh,
I know all the rivers you let flow
Doesn’t matter if they’re fast
Or if they’re slow
Cause I’ve seen em’ lazy I’ve seen em’ wide
Think about the future pick up your pride
I’m too familiar with your salty tears
Cause they come part of me, over the years
I don’t like the way you let the moon conrol your moods
I know you think he’s smart
His moon beams soothe,
And it’s so easy cause he doesn’t move
Night comes I can smell your perfume

Why are you so goddamn blue?

Well the sea has a sister her name is the sky
And they’re always looking eachother eye to eye
And the sea looks up to the sky to say
Can’t you relax and let me play?
You know that I never lie
And I don’t tell mom that you’re always high
You got three shades blue, black, or gray
And you’ve got the power to control the day
But all that power must really get old,
Don’t always have to do what your told
And I’ve seen the way you flirt with the sun
I know you think he’s cool-- so much fun
But I don’t think he really cares
If you haven’t realized he ain’t always there

Why are you so goddamn bule?
Why are you so goddamn blue?
Why are you so goddamn blue?
Why are you so goddamn blue?
Why are you so goddamn blue?
Track Name: I Work, I Work, I Work
I love him like a Johsua Tree loves its water
Don’t always need it but it’s nice when it gets hotter
I love him like a redwood loves the sky
What’s the fun if I could have him all the time?

We stayed stoned through the width of South Dakota
Only stopping once for cigarettes and road sodas
There’s nothing left in that god forsaken state
Nothing there left for us to argue or debate

I love him like a ferry loves deasel fuel, you know
We both missed it on that Thursday afternoon
It was summertime in Hyannis and we had to park
In some private lot
Should’ve left earlier and it was probably all my fault

I love him like a Johsua Tree loves its water
Don’t always need it but it’s nice when it gets hotter
I love him like a redwood loves the sky
What’s the fun if I could have him all the time?

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I put myself through college while he was doing cocain
Playing three hour bar shows where nobody knew my name
When he called me up one November night to ask if he could sit in
I was taught it’s so much easier to just forgive

I love him like he loves his new girlfriend
If he had it his way, he’d never talk to me again except:
“Hey howya doin’, you know I miss you a lot too.”
But out of all the boys in the United States, oh,
I would still ride with you.

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work, I work
I work, I work, I work, so hard

I love him like a redwood loves the sky
What’s the fun if I could have him all the time?
Track Name: Dead River Road
North on 201 you will see
A faded town sign: FORKS, POPULATION 30
I don’t really know what brought me there
Must have been that strange northern New England air

So I stopped to ask directions, cause I wasn’t sure
At a little gas station, Berry’s General Store
The old man smiled, said what are you doing here?
Then he pointed up the road-- a couple more miles, dear

Well the Dead River Road is a long dirt road way up North
Just across the bridge when you drive into the West Forks
Well that road was long but to me it always felt short
I’m the only one who knew that they took him away

I got out of my car to look around
Thats when he saw me, knew that I wasn’t from town
Walking side by side, they told me it was wrong
But he liked the way I sang those old folk songs
Never heard a Maine kid play the banjo like he could
And when that river ran hard, the acoutics were so good

When he asked me how I felt about the passing of time,
He told me he had something to ease my mind:

Well the Dead River Road is a long dirt road way up North
And I never seen, you know, I’d never seen a needle before
Those woods were wild, but his eyes were wilder
I’m the only one who knew they took him away

Word got around, just like they told me it would
Two river rat kids, who were up to no good.
My feet got cold one morning, it wasn’t a life that I loved
So I left him there, simply smiling at the sun
Now they say it was fate, or maybe I just timed it right
Blue and red reflecting off the trees in the broad daylight

When they read him his rights, I began to shiver
Because I followed his stare, directly to the Dead River

Well the Dead River Road is a long dirt road way up North
And I never seen, you know, I’d never seen a needle before
Those woods were wild, but his eyes were wilder
I’m the only one who knew they took him away

Now I got some kids, a big family of my own
Sometimes I leave for the weekend, walk the Dead River Road
I got no idea what that boy’s doing now
I thought about it, ain’t no use askin’ around
But if you listen closesly, you can hear
His banjo picking in the cool Autumn air.

Well the Dead River Road is a long dirt road way up North
Just across the bridge when you drive into the West Forks
Well that road was long but to me it always felt short
I’m the only one who knew that they took him away
Track Name: Madison, Maine
I’m sadder than the river that runs through the mill in Madison, Maine
Sadder than the McAdams Station after the evening train
Well now I’ve let my lover go
To where I don’t know
And now I’m sitting here watching the leaves
Float away on the lake

I started drinking once I hit the toll booth on 295
Drove up north, with bloodshot eyes
Well now I’ve let my lover go
To where, I don’t know
And now I’m sitting here watching the leaves
Float away on the lake

You know this Carrabassett Valley green
Is taking care of all my heads needs
And now I’m sitting here watching the leaves
Float away on the lake

I can put this smile on
Pretend I ain’t been doing wrong
And now I’m sitting here watching the leaves

Float away

Track Name: Sunshine In My Soul
Sunshine in my soul
I need some sunshine in my soul
I need some sunshine in my soul
I’m getting older
Oh, I’m getting older

Tomatoes on the vine
I grow tomatos off the vine
I eat tomatos off the vine
I’m getting stronger
Oh, I’m getting stronger

Take me to the water
I said take me to the water
I said let me see the water
I’m getting cleaner
Oh, I’m getting cleaner

A hundred twenty holes on a cirbbage board
It’s so easy to forget
That the ones I miss the most
Are the ones that I have not yet met
Theres a boy out there who loves me more
Than shelter in the rain
Its funny how he doesn’t even know my name

Kiss me twice for fun
I said kiss me twice
I said miss me twice for fun
I’m getting richer, oh, I’m getting richer

Take me to my brothers
I said take me to my brothers
I said let me see my brothers
I’m getting meaner
Oh, I’m getting meaner

Rocks out on the shore
I see those rocks out on the shore
I see those rocks out on the shore
I’m getting wiser
Oh, I’m getting wiser

A hundred twenty holes on a cirbbage board
It’s so easy to forget
That the ones I miss the most
Are the ones that I have not yet met
Theres a man out there who loves me more
Than shelter in the rain
Its funny how he doesn’t even know my name

Sunshine in my soul
I need some sunshine in my soul
I need some sunshine in my soul
I’m getting older
Oh, I’m getting older
Track Name: That Picture
I don’t want to see that picture
I don’t want to think about that time
You know I once had lungs that could
Breathe oxygen relatively fine

I don’t want to see that picture
I don’t want to think about that time
I’ve got a lot going for me
I’ve got a lot to occupy my mind

I like to sit and drink my coffee
Watch the log trucks drive by slow
But I saw you there with your new girl
I decided to get my coffee to go

There's a bus that takes me here up to
The war zone off upper-central ave.
I’m usually the only white girl on it
I don’t think the city bus systems bad

In the rearview mirror
I watch the bus driver shake his head
He’s probably got all the problems in the world
Or he’s thinking I’m gonna wind up dead

I don’t know his morales
I don’t know who he sees at night
I don’t know what he considers black
Or what he considers light

Perhaps there was a time in his life
When he would need this song
Maybe when he’s driving the bus alone
He’d turn it up and he’d sing along

He’d sing I don’t want to see that picture
I don’t want to think about that time
You know I once had lungs that could
Breathe oxygen relatively fine

We don’t want to see that picture
We don’t want to think about that time
We’ve got a lot going for us
We’ve got a lot to occupy our minds

Yes we’ve got a lot going for us
We’ve got a lot to occupy our minds

Yes we’ve got a lot going for us
We’ve got a lot to occupy our minds
